Cockitrough
A Cockitrough is a specially designed bird waterer that provides a permanent fresh water supply for birdlife in urban areas. It features a simple, practical, and low-maintenance design, automatically refilling to ensure a consistent supply of clean water. Positioned 3-4 metres above the ground, it keeps birds safe from predators and human interference, making it an ideal solution for supporting native bird species in Hilton.
Why Hilton Needs a Cockitrough
Our community has expressed concerns over the increasing lack of clean and safe water sources for our endangered cockatoos. Our mission is to preserve and protect vulnerable bird species in an ever-drying climate. The Cockitrough stations provide a simple, practical, low-maintenance, and safe solution to supply regular fresh water for native birdlife within Hilton.

How It Came To Be
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Hilton residents, through process from bin sticker sales, and community events, we successfully raised funds to support this important initiative.
We were also successful in securing a WIRES grant with Perth NRM, which provided funding for our first Cockitrough in Griffiths Park. This grant enabled us to purchase the Cockitrough, plant over 2,500 native plants as a food source for the Black Cockatoo's. The City of Fremantle installed the Cockitrough at their own cost on our behalf.
Griffiths Park was strategically chosen in consultation with BirdLife WA to maximise access for bird populations along known flight paths.
A second Cockitrough is on its way! This is the fully community-funded Cockitrough which will be installed at Grigg Park before summer 2026/27.
