Re-wilding Verges
Have you seen some of the stunning native verge gardens we have in Hilton? We have been on the hunt for verges that can be planted to support our local biodiversity. Ideally, we looked for groups of adjacent verges to create wildlife corridors and a more resilient habitat. We found several promising locations and are excited to move forward with this initiative, run by the Hilton Precinct's, Gardens Verges and Trees volunteers.
We initially sent out an expression of interest via Hilton Hub on Facebook for people across the suburb. As a trial, a home on Oldham Crescent will be starting in December 2024. This property currently consists of couch lawn and some native trees. Across three weekends in December, the Gardens, Verges, and Trees volunteers, along with the South Fremantle Colts undertaking a volunteering opportunity, will be digging up the couch and replacing it with mulch. This will prepare for gardening come Autumn 2025, when natives will be planted.
This project is completed in conjunction with the homeowner to provide additional support in redeveloping their verges. We are looking for funding to assist with the ongoing costs, but most of the cost is at the owner’s expense. This is done in conjunction with the City of Fremantle’s Verge Policy and by utilising free services such as verge design at the City of Fremantle.
